Lipoic Acids
Lipoic Acid, also known as Alpha-Lipoic Acid, is similar in structure and function to a vitamin. Because of its wide range of health benefits, Lipoic Acid may prove to be the most important nutraceutical compound on the market today. However, not all Lipoic Acid is the same!
Are You Taking The Right Kind of Lipoic Acid?
While it may come as a surprise, the vast majority of Alpha Lipoic Acid products on the market contain an unnatural form of Lipoic Acid that is not found anywhere in nature and did not even exist until it was chemically synthesized in 1952.
You want to avoid taking this kind of product.
Not only will you have trouble absorbing unnatural Lipoic Acid, it may actually inhibit the most essential properties of natural Lipoic Acid, including energy production!
That’s why it’s so important to know your lipoic acids.
The three different forms of Lipoic Acid
1. R-Lipoic Acid
Natural. Recommended.
Also known as:
(+) Lipoic Acid
(+)- Thioctic Acid
RLA
R-1,2-Dithiolane Valeric AcidR Lipoic Acid is the natural form of Lipoic Acid — the exact type your body makes and requires. It is significantly more potent than the unnatural form because your body “recognizes” it and “knows” how to properly utilize and metabolize it.
Many experts consider R Lipoic Acid to be a “conditionally essential” nutrient, meaning that while the human body can manufacture it on its own, there are certain conditions under which it can’t make enough. For example, aging and some disease states may inhibit the natural ability of the cells to make RLA.
GeroNova offers two basic types of stabilized R-Lipoic Acid products: quick absorption water-soluble salts (RLA + sodium or potassium) and slow absorption oil-based products (RLA + its reduced form R-Dihydrolipoic Acid (DHLA).
2. S-Lipoic Acid
NOT Natural. NOT Recommended.
Also known as
(-) Lipoic Acid
S-Thioctic Acid
SLA
S-1,2-Dithiolane Valeric AcidS Lipoic Acid is not found in nature. Rather, it is a by-product of chemical synthesis.
S-Lipoic has several problems. First, your body doesn’t “recognize” or “know” how to use it, so it’s difficult to absorb. But even more troubling, research indicates this unnatural version may actually inhibit the most essential properties of the R-Lipoic Acid form! For example, while R Lipoic supports energy production, S Lipoic may limit it.
3. Alpha-Lipoic Acid
50% Natural / 50% NOT Natural. NOT Recommended.
Also known as:
Racemic Alpha-Lipoic Acid
(R/S) Alpha-Lipoic Acid
(+/-) Alpha-Lipoic Acid
ALA
Thioctic Acid
R/S-1,2-Dithiolane Valeric AcidAlpha Lipoic Acid (variously misspelled alpa lipoic acid, alph lipoic acid and alfa lipoic acid) is an umbrella term.
ALA can be either natural (R-Lipoic Acid), unnatural (S-Lipoic Acid), or a mixture of both (racemic). The Alpha- Lipoic Acid found in the vast majority of nutritional supplements today is a 50/50 blend of natural (R-Lipoic) and unnatural (S-Lipoic) Lipoic Acid. Therefore, it is plagued by the same problems that S-Lipoic acid is.
All of GeroNova’s Lipoic Acid supplements contain only natural Lipoic Acid, as either R-Lipoic Acid or a combination of R-Lipoic Acid and its reduced form, R-Dihydrolipoic Acid (DHLA).
Additionally, GeroNova’s R-Lipoic Acid products are designed for superior absorption and are formulated using a unique stabilization process that ensures maximum stability.
